What Is Urticaria?

Urticaria is a form of allergic reaction that leads to hives on certain parts of the body. Hives are raised, red, and itch and can lead to both emotional and physical distress. A hive usually goes away within 24 hours. Often, new hives will develop as old ones fade, so that the outbreak may last days or weeks.  Most cases of hives last less than 6 weeks (acute hives), but some can last longer (chronic hives). At Helena Dermatology, we will provide an evaluation to help identify what may be causing your hives and medications which may help manage its symptoms.

What Causes Urticaria?

Urticaria happens when the body reacts to an allergen and releases histamine. The histamine and chemicals that are produced in reaction to the allergen cause inflammation and fluid to accumulate under the skin, causing wheals. The allergens that trigger this condition are varied and have to be identified on a case-by-case basis. Certain infections, medications, or underlying diseases can cause urticaria. Urticaria can be chronic, persisting or recurring for months to years. Commonly the cause of hives cannot be identified, particularly for chronic hives.
