What Is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes bumpy, red patches covered with white scales to appear on the body. These patches can grow anywhere, but most appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Though it isn’t contagious, it can appear among members of the same family. This condition most often appears in early adulthood. In severe cases, it can cover large parts of the body. The patches can heal and then come back throughout a person’s life if left untreated.
What Causes Psoriasis?
The exact cause is not currently known, but most experts believe that the condition appears due to a dysregulated immune system. When the immune system is dysregulated, inflammation can appear, triggering rapid cell growth. Normally, skin cells are replaced every 10-30 days. With psoriasis, new cells can grow as quickly as every 3-4 days. The buildup of old cells being replaced by new ones creates those silver scales. Emotional stress, traumatic injuries, infections and certain blood pressure medications can catalyze this condition.
