What Is Actinic Keratosis?
Actinic keratosis is one of the most common conditions addressed at our Helena Dermatology center. This condition appears as a superficial, scaly area that is often rough to touch. It can be associated with hyperpigmentation, appearing insidiously and remaining consistent. It can be made worse by minor trauma such as rubbing with a towel or certain topical treatments as well as microdermabrasion. Improperly administered chemical peels and facials can also exacerbate the appearance of this issue. It is common practice to treat the lesions developed through this condition, since roughly 10% can progress to skin cancer.
What Causes Actinic Keratosis?
Sun damage is the most common cause. Symptoms of this disease include the appearance of rough, dry patches of skin, itching and burning, and discoloration. This condition can be found primarily in areas that are exposed to the sun including your face, lips, ears, hands, forearms, scalp, and neck. The biggest risk factors associated with the development of this condition are being over 40, having a weak immune system, and having a history of frequent sunburn.
